Happy National Day, Sweden!
Sweden
Today's Flag
is from Sweden, a Scandinavian country located in northern Europe. In 2005, the Swedish parliament voted to create the public holiday commemorating the election of King Gustav Vasa in 1523. The day had previously been celebrated as Swedish Flag Day, but was not an official national holiday. The tradition of honouring King Gustav had begun in 1916 at the Stockholm Olympic Games.
Sweden is a thousand-year old advanced welfare state that gave up military aggression a very long time ago. Swedish statesmen have played major roles at the United Nations - a testament to the fact that since 1814, Sweden has practiced neutrality and refused to engage in war. This however does not make Sweden immune to the threat of hostilities. Sweden has decided to enhance its security position together with Finland by joining NATO in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.
